Some of the most requested books in the Art & Music Department are those on the music business and associated topics, i.e., management and booking, career advancement, marketing and promotion, record labels, recording, and legal issues. For the first time in three years, a bibliography of these books has been revised and updated. It is now available as a printed brochure and online: The Music Business: Basic Sources of Information. On Sunday, October 15, as part of InventorFest 2006, the Main Library will be presenting Listen 2 This! Breaking into Hip Hop Music, a music business program with an emphasis on local hip hop. The program, to be held in the Huenefeld Tower Room, will run from 1:30-4:45 and is divided into two parts. From 1:30-3:00 there will be a panel discussion, featuring author/commentator Kathy Y. Wilson as moderator and panelists including journalist Mildred Fallen, local hip hop artists Napoleon Maddox and Mr.5th, copyright expert John Schlipp, and Shake It Records shop/label owner Darren Blase. Interested musical artists can sign up for a first come, first served open-mic performance of a song after the discussion, with Elementz instructor DJ Pillo spinning and manning the sonic controls from 3:15-4:45.
In subcultural harmony, the Art & Music Department is hosting a month-long exhibit displaying three works of graffiti art by Jason Brunson, a local member of the renowned DF Crew graffiti collective.
