The Award Goes To: Best Cookbooks of the Year
Categories: Cookbooks , Award Winners
An update for those of us who were not able to attend: the annual James Beard Foundation Awards Gala was held in New York City this past week. Think, 'Academy Awards for the restaurant industry'. The menu for this event is enough to send any foodophile straight into Nirvana; my favorites being the Peekytoe Crab Cappuccino with Lemon Verbena, followed by a taste of Chocolate Diablo Panna Cotta with Amarena Cherries and Cocoa Nibs. To quote Dave Barry, I am not making this up. My imagination simply cannot stretch that far.
The mission of the James Beard Foundation is to celebrate America's culinary heritage and diversity, and each year awards are granted in such categories as Restaurant Design, Journalism, Chefs, and of course, Books - 15 books, to be exact. Here is a smattering of titles from the awards list, which are in the Library's extensive cookbook collection:
- Garnering two awards in the 'Cookbook of the Year' and the 'Food of the Americas' categories: The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook by Matt Lee and Ted Lee
- General: Tasty: Get Great Food on the Table Every Day by Roy Finamore
- Healthy Focus: Whole Grains: Every Day, Every Way by Lorna Sass
- Entertaining: The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining by Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison
- Single Subject: The Essence of Chocolate by John Scharffenberger and Robert Steinberg
Digging in to any of these award-winners will surely reward you with some dazzling recipes to try out on your own. Bon Appetit!
