Mysteries in the Mediterranean: Inspector Alvarez

Categories: Mystery & Suspense

Anyone who sets out to write a mystery has to start with the development of a great sleuth: a character who is clever yet who also has enough human foibles to create a certain charm.  Hercule Poirot and Stephanie Plum are fine examples of detectives, professional or amateur, who truly seem to have a life of their own.

Enter Inspector Enrique Alvarez, who first appeared in 1974 and continues to entertain readers in his characteristically continental style.

Author Roderic Jeffries was smart enough to place Inspector Alvarez on the island of Mallorca, a tourist mecca which is 90 miles from the eastern coast of Spain.  Islands naturally draw people with lots of money and lots of motives, thus providing Jeffries with an unending supply of storylines for his mystery series.  The good inspector himself enjoys the leisurely island life, partaking of cognac and fine cuisine as often as possible, when he is not dealing with his bothersome boss at the police department or attempting to solve yet another murder.

The most recent addition to this series was published in April 2007: Murder Needs Imagination.  Take a look into the 31 titles in Jeffries' long-running series, such as:
