Emi and the Rhino Scientist

I received a copy of Emi and the Rhino Scientist by Cincinnati’s Mary Kay Carson a few weeks ago, and can not stop raving. It is fabulous- and just received its first starred review from Kirkus!
Emi and the Rhino Scientist follows Terri Roth, director of the Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) at the Cincinnati Zoo, in her worldwide effort to help the endangered Sumatran rhino avoid extinction. The book weaves the story of Emi and her baby Ipuh with information on the habitat and life cycle of this enormous and beautiful creature.
It is beautifully written and includes amazing and thoughtfully chosen color photographs by another Cincinnati native, Tom Uhlman. Five varieties of rhinoceros are discussed, including their background, habits, and habitats. There is even a “Rhino Field Guide” in the back. The reproductive research of CREW is also highlighted.
Mary Kay Carson will be autographing her works on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Books by the Banks: The Cincinnati USA Book Festival. She and photographer Tom Uhlman will also present a program for children at the event, “Emi and the Rhino Scientist: The Story Behind Cincinnati’s Famous Rhino Family” at 11:45 a.m. The program will feature a slide show of photos from the book, a reading, and behind the scenes stories on how they researched, wrote, and photographed the book.
