Devils in the Sugar Shop

Categories: Romance , Fiction

Schaffert’s Devils in the Sugar Shop is sophisticated chick lit set in present day Omaha, Nebraska.  The story is centered around a group of women who, try as they might, just can’t seem to get it right.  DeeDee is the proprietress of a very tasteful adult oriented store called the Sugar Shop.  Ashley is a failed writer of erotic fiction.  Artist and bookstore owners are also among the occupations of the group.  Add stalker to the list, but just whom that happens to be is a delicious mystery deeply embedded in the novel.

Affairs with each other’s ex’s and current lovers for that matter, abound, and just how and when these secret trysts unfold, keeps the novel flowing.  The highly spirited melodrama culminates in an incendiary coup de grace, as a house fire serves to shed some much needed light on a shadowy town and illuminate the path for those ladies who were once lost.

Timothy Schaffert’s perception of the female mind is uncanny and dead on.  It’s very apparent that he does his research. Schaffert is ultra successful at character development.   He has truly mastered the feat of making the reader believe that the people in the novel exist and more so, he makes the reader believe in them.

Omaha, Nebraska really comes alive in this title and is possibly, but maybe unwittingly, promoted as a perfectly viable central hot spot.  Schaffert is the author of The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God.  Sugar Shop is recommended for those who like their beach reads a little on the hotter than hot side and chances are, the reader may turn red more from the book than the sun.  Saucy Midwestern chick lit was never written so well.
