April is National Poetry Month!

Categories: Children's Books , Poetry

National Poetry Month (NPM) is a celebration of poetry first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. NPM brings together publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools, and poets around the country to celebrate poetry through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events.

The library is no exception! April is packed with poetry events for teens and adults. And we’ve got several new poetry books perfect for youngest poets in your family.

  • Jane Yolen’s Count Me a Rhyme, a worthy companion to her best-selling Color Me A Rhyme (2000), is a handsome number themed poetry collection. Taking its cue from Mother Nature, each poem is featured beside an inspiring photograph on a gorgeous double-page. The poems themselves are witty and well suited to reading aloud.
  • Shout!: Little Poems that Roar is a collection of 21 poems celebrating the joys of childhood. A Million Uses for Ketchup was a personal favorite!
  • The Snack Smasher: And Other Reasons It’s Not My Fault is a hilarious collection, perfect for readers who have ever wondered where those missing puzzle pieces go and why they wake up with crazy hair on picture day.
  • Jack Prelutsky, the master of silliness, introduces a menagerie of oddly wonderful and uniquely skilled creatures, combinations of animals and objects, in Behold the Bold Umprellaphant and other poems. Ballpoint Penguins, Clocktopus, Zipperpotamuses, Spatuloon, Tubaloons and more! The book also includes a CD of the poems read aloud!
  • Looking for something to capture the attention of even the wiggliest? Go!: Poetry in Motion includes poems about every imaginable thing that goes- from merry-go-rounds to helicopters, skis, scooter and even roller skates!
