Alternative crafts: Roller Derby Knitting

Categories: Arts & Crafts

Having recently become a knitter, I am amazed by the variety of knitting books that are available. One of my favorite examples is a book of ideas for Knitters Who Also Love the Roller Derby - whoever they may be, God bless them for breaking stereotypes left and right.

Knockdown Knits by Toni Carr, subtitled "Thirty Projects from the Roller Derby Track", includes patterns for such cool items as stripey leg warmers, a sling for that broken arm, and baby booties that look like little roller skates. Even for non-knitters, browsing through this book could be fun - you'll find lots of Derby data in the margins.  Should you want to see the real thing in action, check out Cincinnati's own Rollergirls team.

I am reminded of a recent news story of a librarian from Akron, Ohio who spends her evenings as "MegaBeth", Roller Derby Queen.  More stereotypes broken!
